PLAYA DEL CARMEN, MEXICO — An attack at 10-day electronic music festival in Mexico killed at least five people when a gunman opened fire outside a popular nightclub just south of Cancun.
On January 16 at around 2:30am, shooting erupted at the annual BPM music festival when a man armed with a gun tried to enter the Blue Parrot nightclub in Playa del Carmen. At that moment, gunshots were fired in the immediate vicinity, as the lone gunman reportedly exchanged fire with someone inside the venue. The music festival’s staff intervened to protect club-goers, and they themselves were caught in the crossfire. Three security staff have been reported dead.
The unknown assailant then fled, as the remaining revelers exited the club, running for their lives. One woman was trampled in the stampede. Video of the incident captured during the frightening scramble depicts the horror.
Among the five confirmed dead by officials are two Canadians, an Italian, and a Colombian, with at least 15 more injured. Authorities have detained three suspects, and have ruled out terror as a motive in the attack.
The deadly incident took place on the closing day of the festival.
