INDONESIA — Meet DJ Butterfly, Indonesia’s answer to Paris Hilton, minus the dancing skills.

Clips of her performances behind the decks have become viral sensations for … well, the obvious reason. Hint: it’s not for her excellent track selection or technical mixing skills.

The DJ, who’s originally from Thailand but works in Indonesia’s lower-tier club scene, doesn't’ seem to actually DJ at all. Instead she holds the crowd’s attention mostly by bouncing her two prized investments. Thai technology really is something.

Internet trolls have pointed out that the CDJs she gyrates behind are often not even turned on. Some especially unkind internet sleuths and man-children with too much time on their hands believe she may even be a man. Thanks, Instagram! Now that’s just mean.

Whatever. DJ Butterfly, you go girl.

CHOBE NATIONAL PARK, BOTSWANA — Elephants don’t seem to need to sleep as much as other mammals, according to a recent study.
“Elephants are the shortest sleeping mammal — that seems to be related to their large body size,” Paul Manger, a research professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and lead author of the study told BBC News. The study was published in the journal PLOS ONE.

The researchers monitored two free-roaming female African elephants in Chobe National Park, Botswana for 35 days. Data shows the elephants normally only sleep for two hours between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

According to the study, the elephants can stay awake up to 46 hours while walking as far as 30 km. They only went into rapid eye movement sleep every three or four days. REM sleep is believed to be critical in memory consolidation.

The study does not answer the question of how elephants managed to survive on such limited sleep. The researchers are planning to do follow-up research on more elephants.

PARIS — A young male white rhino at a zoo just outside of Paris suffered a gruesome death in a place where he was thought to be safe.

On the night of March 6, poachers broke into the Thoiry Zoo through the rear entrance, and made their way to the white rhino enclosure. There, they found Vince, 4, who’d arrived at the zoo from the Netherlands in 2015.

Wasting no time, the poachers shot Vince in the head three times, slaying the animal, the Guardian reported.

The poachers then used a chainsaw to saw off Vince’s horn, potentially worth up to $60,000. The poachers began to hack off the dead rhino’s second horn, but didn’t finish the job, either due to mechanical failure or a disturbance of some kind.

The two other white rhinos at the zoo, Gracie, 37, and Bruno, 5, managed to escape the same bloody fate. This is believed to be the first time a rhino has been attacked and killed at a zoo in Europe, despite there being security cameras and on-site overnight staff in place.

Rhino horns are coveted for traditional Asian medicines, as they are said to act as an aphrodisiac.

Roughly 21,000 white rhinos are left in the world.

HIALEAH, FLORIDA — An alcoholic employee tried to murder his boss after being fired for being intoxicated on the job, but failed at attempts to both stab him and run him over with his truck.

An employee at an air conditioning repair firm, Reyes Osorio was fired by his supervisor, Reynaldo Mendez, for showing up to work drunk. Osorio didn’t take the firing well, and demanded he be paid for two days of work he was owed. Through a barrage of texts, Osorio threatened to use a gun, machete, or knife to kill Mendez if he refused.

The two men agreed to meet up at a cafeteria to settle their dispute, but when Mendez arrived in the parking lot, Osorio jumped out of his pickup truck brandishing a knife. Security camera footage shows the insane moment Osorio lunged at his old boss with the knife, trying to stab him. He managed to stab Mendez in the chest and left arm, before Mendez used a rock to knock the knife out of Osorio’s hand.

The two men then got into their vehicles, with Osorio repeatedly crashing into Mendez’s work van. Osorio eventually drove away, and Mendez walked out of his van. He apparently had no idea Osorio had somehow snuck back into the lot, until the black pickup truck came charging at him, almost running him over.

Osorio attempted to hit him with the truck not once, but twice, ramming Mendez against the fence. Luckily, the fence allowed him to bounce back rather than be crushed, and Mendez miraculously survived the relentless attack.

After Osorio finally left, Mendez drove himself to the hospital, and did not report the scuffle to police. Authorities only caught wind of the crime when the owner of the fence filed a property damage report.

On Feb. 28, Osorio, 52, was arrested on charges of attempted first-degree murder.

JERSEY VILLAGE, TEXAS — Disturbing details have begun to emerge surrounding the grizzly murder of an unidentified teenage girl just outside Houston.

A Salvadoran transnational street gang known locally as MS-13 is alleged to have been behind the killing. Authorities have obtained testimony from witnesses as well as two suspects involved in the homicide, and have reason to believe the act was a form of satanic ritual.

Officials say the unidentified 15-year-old, referred to only as “Genesis,” was lured to the gang’s apartment, along with two other girls between the ages of 14-16. In there was a satanic shrine, erected by the chapter’s lead gang member, Miguel Angel Alvarez-Flores, 22, also known as “Diabolico.” The girls were reportedly being held against their will.

When Genesis reportedly had an outburst in front of the shrine, disrespecting their lord, Diabolico was offended. He approached the statue, offered it a cigarette, and said that he was then given instructions by it. Prosecutors say Diabolico told them “The beast did not want a material offering, but wanted a soul.”

Genesis was then taken by gang members for a drive, where she was told they were meeting a weed dealer. Along the way, they pulled over, told Genesis to sit on the grass, where Diabolico handed a gun to another member, who pulled the trigger. The morning of February 16, the girl’s body was found with gunshot wounds to her face and chest, leaving her initially unidentifiable.

The victim is now believed to have been 15-year-old Genesis Lizbeth Cornejo, who disappeared on January 19. She is said to have run away from home. The gang member who killed her, Diego Hernandez-Rivera, 18, was arrested along with Diabolico on February 27.

The two now stand trial for kidnapping her, holding her hostage, physically and sexually torturing her, tattooing her body against her will, and killing her for insulting their cult god. The girl’s family has been notified, and are reportedly “distraught that they’ve lost their daughter.”

The majority of MS-13 gang members, including the two suspects, are known to be illegal immigrants in the U.S.

OVERTORNEA, SWEDEN — A small town Swedish politician proposed this week to allow workers an one-hour paid break during the day to go home and get some afternoon delight.

Per-Erik Muskos of the Social Democratic party made the proposal in his town of 2,000 people as a way to promote well-being and make some babies, Aftonbladet reported.

“It’s about having better relationships,” Muskos told the AFP. “There are studies that show sex is healthy.”

“When sex is also an excellent form of exercise with documented positive effects on well-being, the municipality should kill two birds with one stone and encourage employees to use their fitness hour to go home and have sex with their partner,” Muskos told Aftonbladet.

Muskos feels that couples don’t get enough quality time together especially with the everyday stresses of things like work and raising kids.

He may be onto something. Sex has been proven to lower blood pressure, help with sleep, prevent colds and even help with hiccups, according to Vice.

PINE HILLS, FLORIDA — A band of suspected thieves trying to make their getaway after a diaper heist at a Walmart were thwarted by an armed shopper who was packing heat.

The morning of February 4, witnesses say they saw three individuals pushing shopping carts loaded with diapers and other baby items to their car in the parking lot. A Walmart employee then came running outside screaming “Don’t get in the car!” Suddenly, a 50-year-old customer then pulled out a gun and fired at the bandits.

Wounded but not done in yet, the shoplifters hopped in the vehicle and sped off, crashing into two other cars. They inevitably left the vehicle and continued to flee on foot. The car was a stolen vehicle that had been jacked on January 13. One of the suspects, 19-year-old Arthur Adams, was later found at a nearby gas station. Workers said he walked in and fell to the floor. Adams later died of gunshots to the stomach and leg after being rushed to hospital.

The armed customer involved in the incident is cooperating fully with the investigation. He claims he fired the gun because he felt threatened and thought he saw one of them reach for a weapon. Police have not disclosed whether he has a license to carry. The state attorney’s office will decide if he will face any charges.

The female accomplice was tracked down by police after she’d gone to the hospital for a gunshot wound to the leg. Authorities are still on the lookout for the other man involved in the theft.

RADCLIFFE, UK — A man has been dubbed the “bungling burglar” by police in Radcliffe, Greater Manchester, after he got stuck trying to enter a house through the window.

Sean Crawshaw, 47, was in the process of breaking and entering when his head got lodged in a small bathroom window 15 feet above the ground. The home’s 60-something owner returned later to find the unwanted guest and called police, the BBC reported.

It took firefighters 20 minutes to rescue the would-be burglar, who injured his ear when they tried to pull him out of the bathroom window.

The Greater Manchester Police said on Twitter that Crawshaw was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison at a court hearing for the December incident.

DEARBORN, MICHIGAN — Two gun advocates were arrested when they walked into a police station in Michigan on Sunday, armed to the teeth with loaded weapons.

Earlier that day, cops pulled over suspects James Baker, 24, and Brandon Vreeland, 40, after receiving a report about two suspicious dudes wearing tactical vests and masks, the Detroit Free Press reported.

A video filmed by Baker and streamed live on Facebook, shows a police sergeant politely questioning the suspects.

Not seeing any weapons inside the vehicle, the officer then let the men go free.

About an hour later, the two men arrived at Dearborn Police Station, saying the prior traffic stop was illegal and they wanted to file a complaint.

Once again, Baker filmed the encounter and streamed it live on Facebook. The footage shows Baker armed with a rifle and wearing a ski mask and tactical vest, as Vreeland carries a tripod and camera.

Inside the station, a stand-off with officers ensued as Baker initially refused to drop his weapons and get down on the ground.

When the men were eventually arrested, police seized a loaded AP-14 rifle and Glock handgun with a bucketload of ammo, along with an AR-15 and an AK-47-style rifle.

On Monday, both the police and a local open-carry advocacy group condemned the men’s actions.

They were charged with a string of minor offenses, including breaching the peace and failure to cooperate with police.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA — Fiat Chrysler recently unveiled their new electric minivan concept. The vehicle recognizes motorists and passengers for a fully customized system.

The Chrysler Portal was unveiled last January at the CES technology expo in Las Vegas. According to Automotive News Europe, it comes equipped with facial recognition technology, via a camera positioned behind the steering wheel.

Drivers need only sit for an initial scan, after which they can set a user profile, which will be stored in the cloud. For subsequent trips, an exterior camera identifies the driver as he or she approaches, and automatically adjusts car settings according to his preferences, even before he or she gets into the vehicle.

The software is reportedly robust enough to recognize drivers even when they modify their look, whether with a haircut, different facial hair, or glasses.

There’s an option to add voice recognition software for added security, as well as extra cameras around the car to recognize and save passenger profiles.

Chrysler has yet to put the Portal into production. No target price or release date has been announced, though the company revealed it may start producing the Portal or something very similar after 2018.

SOFIA, BULGARIA — A stray cat in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia is getting a second chance at life after being fitted with prosthetic paws, the first surgery of its kind in Europe outside the United Kingdom.

According to an AFP report, Pooh the cat lost his hind legs in an accident last year as a kitten. It’s believed he was run over by a car or a train. His difficult situation made him a good candidate for a prosthetic surgery method called ITAP, where the titanium implant pegs against the bone directly.

The protruding titanium stems provide a secure attachment point for the cat’s paws to snap in, which are made of polymer and rubber. For the procedure to be a complete success, Pooh's skin will eventually grow over the bone and stems tightly enough to prevent infections. Now 10 months old, Pooh is running around fine on his news hind legs at Sofia's Central Vet Clinic, and has even been seen cleaning them.

Another young amputee cat, Steven, has now also undergone the same procedure. These are Bulgaria’s first successful feline prosthetic surgeries, and the first in all of Europe outside the UK. In 2009, a cat named Oscar was fitted with prosthetic hind legs in a similar procedure in England, which cost roughly $62,000. Pooh’s surgery cost roughly $1,600, and was paid for by donations from the animal shelter that cares for him. Now that he’s got functional legs, the shelter is trying to help him find a new home.

NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA — A young woman on board a Spirit Airlines flight from New Orleans to Fort Lauderdale says she was booted off the plane moments before take off because of her large breasts.

On January 30, the woman, 21, was sitting in her seat when she claims a flight attendant asked her to cover up her exposed bosom. She tried, but apparently her attempt wasn’t enough, and twice more she was told by other flight attendants to keep her chest covered. When she said she couldn’t help the fact her breasts were big and asked for a blanket, the staff told her the airline no longer offered them, so she put a coat on.

A female passenger sitting in front turned around to offer the embarrassed young girl a tissue, and that’s when a male stewardess came by and kicked them both off the plane, as well as the girl’s friend. The sympathetic passenger, Catherine Supp, then posted her account of what happened to Facebook, blasting the airline staff for their hostile treatment toward the girl.

Spirit Airlines stands by its decision, saying it was not a case of oversized breasts, but of bad behavior. A spokesman said the flight attendants had received numerous complaints about the girl acting drunk, a claim the girl and other passengers seated around her refute.

CUIJK, NETHERLANDS — Dutch company ENS Technology has installed air purification systems in car parks in the city of Cuijk, which have proven to substantially improve air quality.

The air purification system installed in carparks is called “the Aufero”, which can remove fine and ultrafine dust particles.

The polluted air is absorbed into the Aufero system by a fan. The air is ionized, forcing the fine and ultrafine dust to settle on a collector surface and transform into coarse dust.

According to Reuters, the system has been proven to reduce fine dust concentration by more than 70% inside car parks, and by about 50% in surrounding areas.

The director of ENS Technology says the company plans to implement the air purification systems in a variety of infrastructures, such as tunnels, train and bus stations.

SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND — A partygirl in the UK is tasting her 15 seconds of fame following a dance move that bit her in the ass.

On January 28, Bonnie-Lee Brown and her girlfriends were pre-gaming for a night out on the town when she decided to bust out the “slut-drop,” a dance move that mimics dropping down from a stripper pole. Unfortunately, Brown failed to notice a shoe rack sitting directly below her derriere, and impaled her posterior with the rack’s metal pole.

Brown wound up having to get three stitches on her butt cheek, and a tetanus shot in case of infection. Once she was done at the hospital though, she and her friends resumed their evening, and went out as planned. Brown says she went to work the next day, and went out again the following evening.

Amused by her misstep, Brown uploaded the video to Twitter, which has since gone viral online.

PORTLAND — A woman’s pet snake saw her gauged earlobe as a fun place to explore, but the reptile’s curiosity landed her in the emergency room.

On Jan. 23, Ashley Glawe, 26, was taking some fun selfies with her slithering sidekick, Bart, a ball python. Pythons enjoy hiding in holes, and while Ashley was framing the photograph, the snake jumped through.

When she realized what had happened, Ashley called the fire department, but officials sent her straight to the emergency room. There, doctors had to numb her ear, lube up her earlobe, and use some string to separate the snake from her skin enough to pull the reptile all the way through, unharmed.

While in the emergency room, Ashley posted photos of her ordeal to Facebook, which then went viral and led to her doing the media circuit. Now separated once again, Ashley and Bart are reportedly doing fine.
