US scientists have re-engineered a vital antibiotic in a bid to wipe out one of the world's most threatening superbugs. Their new version of vancomycin is designed to be ultra-tough and appears to be a thousand times more potent than the old drug, PNAS journal reports. It fights bacteria in three different ways, making it much less likely that the bugs can dodge the attack. It is yet to be tested in animals and people, however. The Scripps Research Institute team hope the drug will be ready for use within five years if it passes more tests.

Two years of war in Yemen have created what the UN has described as the world's largest humanitarian crisis. As well as impending famine, the country is also facing an unprecedented outbreak of cholera. In the past month 52,000 cases of suspected cholera have been reported. The World Health Organisation believes more than 400 people have died in the past month. Our correspondent Nawal Al-Maghafi has this special report from Yemen.

President Donald Trump must honour the temporary nationwide block on his ban on travellers from seven mainly Muslim nations, the Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson has said. Earlier, Federal Judge James Robart ruled against government lawyers' claims that US states did not have the standing to challenge Mr Trump's executive order.

Earlier this month, a US intelligence report concluded that the Kremlin had set out to influence the outcome of the US election, through cyber attacks, internet trolls and â€Å“Russia’s state-run propaganda machine”. The report highlighted the role of state-funded broadcaster RT. In an interview with the BBC’s Steve Rosenberg, RT’s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan told the BBC the report was â€Å“a joke”.

Martin McGuinness, former IRA leader turned peacemaker, has confirmed he will not stand in the Northern Ireland Assembly election. He quit as deputy first minister in a row over a botched green energy scheme, sparking an election on 2 March.
He had been in the post since entering NI's power-sharing assembly in 2007 with ex-political enemy Ian Paisley.

Rescuers say up to 30 people are missing after a hotel in central Italy was hit by an avalanche, apparently triggered by an earthquake. Rescuers battled overnight to reach the Rigopiano hotel, with the first of them arriving on skis. Snow dislodged by the avalanche had blocked the roads in.
One person has been pulled dead from the snow. At least three came out alive but most others appear still buried.
One official said there were "many dead" in the hotel.

Theresa May has said the UK "cannot possibly" remain within the European single market as staying in it would mean "not leaving the EU at all". But the Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said "I think we have to have a deal that ensures we have access to the market, we have British jobs dependent on that market - that's what we'll be pushing for."
